Dhaka is the city of Rickshaw. Dhaka can not be imagined without Rickshaw, is the part of Dhaka life. But the recommendations of World Bank, IMF and donor agencies it evicting from the so called VIP road to stop traffic-jam. However facing straggle for its existence. It is eco-friendly, artistic and non motorized vehicle.
In 1938 jute exporters of Narayangonj and Netrokuna (Mymenshingh) first import Rickshaw for their personal use. From this time it number started to increase. Along with capital Dhaka, it is popular in the town and small cities area as well. On survey of 2000 says, there are 240000 registered rickshaws in Dhaka city. At present the number more has been increased. Except some highway road rickshaw drives everywhere of Dhaka. Although in early period rickshaws were the mode of elite family; but now it become the mode of middle class people.
Anyway rickshaw puller and rickshaw artist both are poor, academically most of case liberate, but rickshaw artist has high aesthetic and art sense. It is a important income source both urban poor of Dhaka city, however the rickshaw puller come from village. A rickshaw puller daily income averagely TK 250-300 in per day, but less income in town and semi urban area. Maximum rickshaw puller of Dhaka has no own rickshaw and house. They hired rickshaw from different Garej with half or full day basis contracts. There are thousands of garages and rickshaw making factories in Dhaka city. By pulling the rickshaw the pullers eighter send money to their family in village or spend with the family living in slums.
