While Dhaka is known as the “City of Mosques” for the numerous houses of worship that dot its skyline, it is full of all kinds of economic activity. The city dates back over 400 years and has since swelled to a population of over 12 million in its metropolitan area, which makes it one of the largest cities in South Asia. The city also boasts the largest number of cycle-powered rickshaws in the world, which ferry its residents from their homes to their places of work – many work as hawkers and roadside merchants, making the city one of the largest centers of informal commerce in the region.
