Koulouninko village is very close to the Malian capital, Bamako. Many people, if they can afford it, commute the 15 kilometers to work in the capital everyday. Koulouninko has an estimated population of about 2,500 people, all of whom get their drinking water from the two hand pumps that exist in the center of the village. Despite its physical remoteness, for the last three years, Koulouninko has had a cybercafé where people can access the Internet and burn downloaded music onto CDs. This cybercafé, like the water pumps, has now become one of the main public meeting points for local residents.
