Founded in 1718, this city remains one of the most unique of all American cities. The city began after being built by French colonists, but later was taken over by Spain by the mid-18th century. By 1801, it reverted to French control, and two years later was sold to the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase. Today, “The Big Easy” is a veritable mélange of indigenous, African, Caribbean, French, Spanish and American cultures. Its musical, artistic and culinary history is unparalleled anywhere else in the country.
