The Three Gorges Dam is the largest hydroelectric energy-producing facility in the entire world. Once fully complete in 2011, the entire complex will have a generating capacity of over 22,000 megawatts, almost double that of its closest rival, the Itaipu dam on the Brazil-Paraguay border. Construction of the Three Gorges Dam, which began in 1994, was a massive undertaking. It involved the displacement of over one million local residents, and countless animal and plant species. All told, it will end up costing over 200 billion Chinese yuan, or over €20 billion.
